Country music’s new up-and-coming artist has proved he can deliver country twang and slow ballads on a silver platter. Morgan Wallen, hailing from northeastern Tennessee is taking the music industry by storm.
Growing up as a pastor’s child, he was introduced to music at a young age Wallen was first noticed on the sixth season of “The Voice” in 2014. After making it through four episodes of the singing competition, he was eliminated. Shortly after being eliminated, Wallen was signed to Big Loud Records, a label that has produced big name artists such as Chris Lane (known for “For Her” and “Take Back Home Girl”) and Jake Owen (known for “Barefoot Blue Jean” and “Down to the Honkeytonk”).
In late April 2018, Wallen released a 14-song debut album “If I Know Me.” This debut album delivers a side of country no one has seen before: the classic country twang, amazing songwriting abilities, and a voice used in a way that can make his listeners feel all the emotion being translated through his lyrics. Wallen stays true to himself and his roots, tying in Rocky Top and the Tennessee Volunteers any way he can.
Singles such as “Up Down (feat. Florida Georgia Line),” “The Way I Talk,” and “Little Rain” have propelled Wallen into stardom as they’ve climbed the charts, showing off his vocal range while reminding us all what country music is for: telling relatable stories. “Up Down” shows off his self-proclaimed favorite pastimes: drinking a little, fishing a little, and “holding it down in BFE.”
Wallen’s latest single from his debut album “Whiskey Glasses” puts a different spin on how to deal with heartbreak (more specifically by asking the bartender for more whiskey to avoid further heartbreak). He was quick to include another heartbreak song, although this follows the storyline of a happy break-up. “Happy Hour” reviews Wallen happy-go-lucky thoughts after breaking up with a prissy, Chanel-carrying woman. In this song, Wallen mentions “She packed up her Chanel, said ‘go to hell,’ taught me a lesson and now as far as she’s concerned I’m in a deep and dark depression.”
Delivering a good love song is well within Wallen’s capabilities through his tracks such as “Had Me By Halftime,” which showcased a wholesome love-at-first-sight love story mixing in a little Tennessee football in the lyrics.
“Redneck Love Song” and “Not Good At Not” showcase the romantic side of Wallen. “Chasin’ You” and “Talkin’ Tennessee” showcase Wallen’s ability to allow his listeners to feel the pure emotion coming through the lyrics.
Wallen will easily make his way into a country-listener’s favorites while attracting music lovers that typically gravitate towards other genres. His down to earth, happy-go-lucky personality is sure to draw people in, and his knowledge beyond his 25 years will make him very successful in years to come.
